Abstract

In 2023-2025 a total of 132 mires in northern Sweden were searched for bark beetles on dead or dying coniferous trees. The mires were covered mostly by Scots pine Pinus sylvestris but also some Norway Spruce Picea abies. They were all situated within a boreal landscape dominated by active forestry on surrounding dry ground, which is typical for most of northern Sweden below the mountain region. No mires within protected old-growth areas were included. The most common species on dead pine was the pine shoot beetle Tomicus piniperda, recorded on 99% of the mires, followed by Pityogenes bidentatus (29%) and
Tomicus minor (5%). Rare and redlisted species of the genus Carphoborus were especially searched for (e.g. Carphoborus cholodkovskyi), but none were found. The pine shoot beetle is highly favored by forestry, and its dominance on nearby mires might be negative for other, more rare wood-living species on pine.
